Just... wow. I was there in December but didn’t go inside because the line was too long. I’m kind of shattered now. I thought I would get a second chance.

I am literally sickened by this. My wife and I traveled to Paris in the late 90s. While so many tour groups streamed through Notre Dame de Paris with hardly a glance, I stood there, feeling so very, very small, as the weight of centuries of history pressed down on me. I can’t even watch or read the news. This is a profound loss.

I walked through the square in September, and similarly didn’t care to get in the extremely long lines. I’m not shattered, but I have a bit of regret. (If I knew then that this would happen . . . I’m still not sure if I would have gotten in line.)

It’s crazy that it survived the blitz and bombings but not a restoration.

I’m listening to a recording of the grand orgue (with Pierre Cochereau at the helm) and choir at Notre Dame. At the beginning of the album they ring the great bourdon “Emmanuel”. They only ring that bell during big events: coronation of kings, visits from the Pope, during times of sorrow and drama and such. It was rung at the end of WW1 and WWII. * I can’t help but believe it would have been rung today if it had been a different building afire.
It’s hard for me to believe this is all happening. I’m almost positive the two organs there are lost. This a heartbreaking day for everyone.

Terribly sad. Was thinking about the stained glass, but didn’t consider the organs.

Not that crazy that it survived “the blitz” given it is located in France, not England.

Truly.
I think context is hard for Americans. One hundred years seems like a long time here. The cathedral was built in 1163...

The French just announced the structure survived. Seems like the stone vaulted ceilings held.
Edit: you can see in nicks picture that the fire burned on top of the vault but didnt seem to compromise it.

This cathedral was more than just a church. It was the heart of a nation. And my heart is broken. I think Americans might understand if the Capitol in DC burned down. I feel sorry for anybody whose souls is barren enough to make jokes about this.

What is truly depressing is that I feel like this can be said about literally any structure in Europe that pre-dates 1945.
Martera Castle, Spain
Spilberk Castle, Brno, Czech Republic
Prizen Castle, Balkans, Kosovo
Tower of Pfarrkirche St. Johann Baptist in 1946
Tower of St. Maria Magdalena Church in 1993
The Historical Archive of Cologne
San Giuseppe dei Falegnami

It’s a crowd of French citizens signing hymns as they look on.
It is a national day of mourning.
In today’s world, I’m just thankful that it appears to be an accident, and not an act of terror.

Yo u will. The fire destroyed the roof and severely damaged the towers, but the structure is apparently safe. They’ll rebuild it ...

It’s sounding like the main structure has survived, the losses of the rose windows are terrible, but the overall loss may not be completely devastating.

Which is why it’s more surprising, given that Imperial Germany introduced themselves to France with this:
The Pariser Kanone, which did in fact, fire at Paris. And destroyed the St Gervais et St Protais Church. And a bunch of other stuff.

Just reading that as well.... the stone structure appears to have held up. Reuters has some good info- graphics. I’ve also read that many works of art were removed for renovation, I hope that’s true.
A great read here from National Geographic....it’s been updated with today’ s news.

Let’s just hope France doesn’t use the same contractors as Haiti or New Zealand, so that this actually gets rebuilt within a normal human lifetime.

Same. When I got the BBC update on my phone it gave me the same feeling as when the Bataclan massacre happened. I’ve visited Paris a few times, the last being after said massacre, and Notre Dame is one of the few man made things that has taken my breath away.
I’m not a Christian, but the place gives you the sense of searching and connectedness all humans have with the spiritual world. It’s a truly awe inspiring place. Every time I’ve visited I’ve just sat for an hour and taken everything in.

Yeah, unfortunately, I have a thing for antique ceilings ;)
Seriously, if you want to see some impressive ceilings, H urst Castle is astounding. The guy imported antique ceilings from Europe. That’s unimaginable money.

Nothing like dumping tons of liquid fire retardants on a faulty structure in one of the most densely populated cities in Europe.
Just the burns from that...

Does anyone know which rose window was destroyed? Hopefully not the north one - IIRC, that still has some glass dating back to the 1200s.

That mostly had to do with the French government not defending the city. The Germans only real bombing of Paris was the Citroen factory. The Allies mostly bombed the working class areas.
